Sanding

Today I was sanding this carving of a dolphin that a friend named Halva has given to me as a going away present. Yes that means I am leaving tomorrow for St. Maarten, and possible until January. I spent a long time slowly sanding this carving and meditating. He spoke a little about his thoughts on the state of the world and the minds of people in St.Kitts. It was especially interesting when he spoke about the lasting effects of slavery on the hearts and minds of the people.
Inside one of the rooms in the Bahai center there is a library of books. There is fairly old collection with few out of print and obscure Bahai related books. One of the books is "The Way of Life of Wu Ming Fu" by Stanwood Cobb. Here is an excerpt:
"Something of sorrow there must be in every life,
Something to annoy-
That from these birth-pangs there bursts suddenly
Some new and splendid joy."

moresquitoes

Once again I have become a blood donor for the mosquito population. Unfortunately they bite in the middle of the night* and not at convenient times in the morning so that I am awake and ready to serve. Today was childrens classes and the Bahai youth* here set up lesson plans to help educate the children on prayer and reverence. Part of this was setting up a spot where they could sit quietly and happily, undisturbed by the storms of the outside world. Something they will definitely need once they become adults or if they ever visit America. This practice of sitting down and praying or just sitting and meditating can be useful in curing the disease known as "waking up on the wrong side of the bed". Unfortunately one has to be constantly innoculated in order to avoid this disease and a steady diet of good thoughts can help alleviate the symptoms. But I am no doctor nor an expert.

King of the jungle

Why is humanity valuable? Physically man can be beaten up with no problem. Throw a man into a wrestling ring with a Silverback gorilla and its lights out for the less hairy one. Put a chess genius against the best computer around and the computer comes up on top. Any Mcdonalds manager would pick the cash register over the average college educated man when it comes to calculating the prices of orders. So where does our value come from? Every measurable feature of us can be either reproduced by *nature or manufactured by ourselves. What do we reflect that is so special?

*Nature is unwittingly subjected to laws and cannot break them. I.E. rocks cannot disobey gravity on earth. Humans differ because they can break these laws like flying in the air which the physical laws of nature did not intend for us.
